WOODLANDS DARK AND DAYS BEWITCHED BIBLIOGRAPHY

I really enjoyed the documentary WOODLANDS DARK AND DAYS BEWITCHED that was released about a month ago on Shudder. I loved the in depth exploration It had on the folk horror genre in movies. However I watched it at a slightly slower pace than some people because I had to make a bibliography of as many of the scholarly books referenced as possible. While there were numerous movies used, I am focusing more on the scholarly materials that the experts in the documentary wrote.

For the most part, the books in my bibliography to are recorded in the order they were mentioned.

English Gothic: A Century of Horror Cinema by Jonathan Rigby

Witchfinder General by Ian Cooper

The Amicus Anthology by Bruce G Hallenbeck

Pallinghurst Barrrow by Grant Hunt

1000 Women in Horror by Alexandra Heller-Nicholas

The Bodies Beneath by William Fowler

London Under: The Secret History eneath the Streets by Peter Ackroyd

Undead Uprising: Haiti, Horror and The Zombie Complex by John Cussans

American Gothic: An Anthology from Salem Witchcraft to HP Lovecraft by Charles Crow

Rural Gothic in American Popular Culture by Bernice M Murphy

Darkly: Black History and America’s Gothic Soul by Lella Taylor

African American Gothic: Screams from the Shadowed Places  by M. Wester

Film, Folklore and Urban Legends by Miekl J Koven

Folk Horror: Hours Dreadful and Things Strange by Adam Scovell

House of Psychotic Women by Kier-La Janisse

Randalls Round by Eleanor Scott

We Don’t GO Back: A Watchers Guide to Folk Horror by Howard David Ingham

Occult America: The Secret History of How Mysticism Shaped Our Nation by Mitch Horowitz

Lottery by Shirley Jackson

I am also including a screenshot of the additional materials they cited as well, especially since some of the experts may not have written books.

Since this documentary is a focus on folk horror movies, as a bibliophile I find it helps to have a list of folk horror novels as well so I found Bookriot's list to be useful for supplementing this study with books!

Of course, I would recommend sitting down to watch this movie. But if you want to go into even more depth, getting your hands on any of these resources will be a treat!
