Hex Education

As a huge fan of horror comedy and loving Maureen Kilmer's previous book, Suburban Hell, I was excited to read Hex Education. Hex Education is a fun book about a coven of witches who accidentally started an fire back when they were in college and years later the past haunts their lives after they reunite. Kilmer writes as though your best friend was sharing how events unfold while adding a lot of dark humor and pop culture references. The supernatural and comedic elements are well woven into the story, making for a rollicking read.

The main character keeps her witchcraft a secret from her husband and kids making her usage of witchcraft in her domestic life feel like a delightful modernization of the television show Bewitched. However, horror unfolds as everything she loves is threatened to be taken away.

This causes an exploration of the what ifs that women have once they reach a "settled” or “stable” place in life in a creative way. The other thematic question that emerge from the way the events unfold is when does one reach a point where they get too much of what is desired. book. Yet the entire book is escapist and entertaining despite these (somewhat) relatable issues that emerge from the plot.

If you are a fan of Rachel Harrison or Grady Hendrix you will definitely want to be reading Maureen Kilmers books! If you like women’s narratives with dark satire or horror comedy, you will definitely want to read this book,

Thank you NetGalley and Putnam Books  for my review copy of this book.
