Mister Magic

Mister Magic is about a podcast reunion of the cast of an old childrens show. The catch is that this show has evidence of ever existing except in the memory of the actors and viewers.

Memory is an interesting literary device in this book. The nature of memory is also constantly reflected upon in this story the memory of the cast and viewers is relied heavily upon for telling the history of the Mister Magic show. But how well memories are constructed is where the horror lies. Mister Magic stresses to children that nothing is more important than the imagination but what is imagination and what is real plays put in a sinister manner.

This story also explores the ramifications of a much loved show being cancelled in the era before streaming. The fact that it leaves without any proof of ever existing adds to the nostalgia for its viewers. Readers who grew up in the 80s will also feel a strong sense of nostalgia with the numerous references to popular culture from the 80s.

But it wasn't just the references to the 80s that made me nostalgic for my own childhood. Capturing the mindset of children in the flashbacks to life on the Mister Magic show also stirred my sentimentality. But it doesn't require the eyes of a child to be terrified of the dark magic of this children's television show.

I am also posting my review on Goodreads.

Thanks to Netgalley for my review copy.
