Two Minutes With the Devil

Is the devil real or not? This is the question this coming of age horror novel keeps asking. But the kids game that playfully asks this question keeps providing horrifying results.

One of the strengths of this book is how the point of view of a young boy is fleshed out. The 80s pop culture references added a layer of nostalgia. However, the constant fear and stigmitazation of AIDS served as a reminder that the 80s were not always kind. While realistic to that point in time, sometimes it felt excessive. At least coming from the perspective of the fear of a boy in the 80s made the misinformation and fear of AIDS understandable.

Another trigger warning is that violence against a dog is implied. Violence against animals, especially dogs is a point of sensitivity for me.

The concept of the book and fast paced plot did make continuing to read this book worth it for me despite my criticisms. Fans of Stranger Things will like this book if they want something with more grit. Overall, it was ab entertaining read.

Thank you Booksirens for my review copy.
